Edinburgh is one of those cities that feels unreal — gothic architecture, cobblestone streets, dramatic viewpoints and cozy cafés around every corner. If you’re planning a trip and want that perfect mix of history, charm and Instagram-worthy spots, here are my absolute favorites.
Where We Stayed – The Bonham Hotel
We stayed at The Bonham Hotel and I can’t recommend it enough. The interior is elegant and timeless with beautiful old-style details, kind staff and stunning views across the city.
If you visit, book their afternoon tea — the homemade scones were honestly the best I’ve ever had. Even if you’re not staying overnight, it’s worth stopping by for tea.

1. Edinburgh Castle
The icon of the city. Sitting dramatically on Castle Rock, it dominates the skyline. 📸 Best photo spot: from below on Princes Street or from The Vennel Viewpoint.

2. Victoria Street – aka Diagon Alley
This colorful curved street looks straight out of Harry Potter. It’s said to have inspired Diagon Alley.
Stop by:
☕ The Elephant House – where J.K. Rowling worked on Harry Potter. They even serve butterbeer-inspired drinks.
☕ Grab coffee at Milkman on your way — tiny, aesthetic and very Instagram-friendly.

3. Grassmarket & The Vennel Viewpoint
Grassmarket is one of Edinburgh’s most vibrant and colorful areas, full of historic pubs, quirky shops, and lively street scenes. It’s perfect for soaking in the city’s atmosphere and capturing those classic cobblestone street shots.

But the real hidden gem is The Vennel stairs. A short climb takes you to a stunning vantage point with one of the best castle views in the city — it’s dramatic, cinematic, and absolutely Instagram-worthy.
4. Circus Lane
Circus Lane is one of the prettiest streets in Edinburgh. Its cobblestones, charming houses, and seasonal flowers climbing up the walls create a timeless, storybook-like atmosphere. The street is quiet and residential, offering a peaceful contrast to the bustling city center, yet it’s just a short walk from major attractions.
Wandering down Circus Lane, you can feel the city’s history in the architecture — the well-preserved cottages and classic design make it feel like stepping back in time. Go early in the morning when the street is calm to fully enjoy its serene charm and elegance.
5. Dean Village
This place feels like a fairytale. Just a short walk from the city center, but suddenly you’re surrounded by peaceful riverside houses and greenery. Perfect for soft, romantic photos.

6. The University of Edinburgh – New College
New College feels like stepping straight into Hogwarts. The gothic architecture, dramatic towers, and stone archways make it a truly magical spot in the city.

Perfect for photos with a mysterious, cinematic vibe, especially when the sunlight hits the façade in the late afternoon.
7. Princes Street Gardens
Nestled in the heart of the city, Princes Street Gardens offers a lush, green escape with iconic views of Edinburgh Castle towering above. It’s a perfect spot for a stroll, a picnic, or snapping classic cityscape photos.
While you’re there, don’t miss Waterstones – Princes Street. The cozy bookstore corners, rustic shelving, and in-store coffee nooks make it an Instagram-worthy stop. Grab a coffee and a book for a classic “cozy city day” photo — the perfect blend of Edinburgh charm.
8. Calton Hill
For panoramic city views, this is the place. Especially magical at sunset. You’ll get views over the city, the sea and Arthur’s Seat.

9. St Giles' Cathedral
Located on the Royal Mile, this cathedral is stunning inside and out. The architecture details are incredible and perfect for dramatic photos.
10. Swanston Farm
If you want something different, head slightly outside the center to Swanston Farm. Rolling hills, Highland cows and countryside views — it feels like a different world.
Final Thoughts
Edinburgh is one of the most photogenic cities in Europe. Whether you’re here for Harry Potter vibes, gothic architecture, cozy cafés or dramatic viewpoints — you’ll find something magical around every corner.
If you’re planning a trip, save this list — and definitely don’t skip afternoon tea at The Bonham 🤍
